I’m Sugen (pronounced “sooo-gen”) and I’ve joined the team as a Civil Engineer. I’ve been in the consulting engineering fraternity for the past 7.5 years now. I’ve worked for three other Johannesburg-based consulting firms during this period.

I have consulting engineering experience in the design and management of civil engineering projects in South Africa, specialising in urban and rural developments for most land use types. My project involvement was predominantly in the Gauteng province. I conducted numerous projects as both, principal agent and project consultant. My expertise includes the planning, design, management and construction monitoring of roads, bulk earthworks, sewer, stormwater and water (to a certain extent) infrastructure projects.

I was born in Durban on 31 October 1979. I matriculated from Greenbury Secondary School in Phoenix before heading to university to study civil engineering. I completed my BscEng (Civil) degree at the University of Natal (Durban) at the end of 2002. Yip, I’m also a coastal boytjie! I relocated to Johannesburg at the beginning of 2003, when my civil engineering career commenced.

On the social side, I enjoy reading anything on business, autobiographies and travel publications. I also enjoy cooking, gardening and exploring the great outdoors. As a true South African “brother” my favourite sport is soccer and I consider live sport as my all-time best TV viewing. I am a big Liverpool FC fan. I also enjoy drama, action and comedy TV shows and movies. Of course, my favourite cuisine has to be hot & spicy Indian dishes. I certainly enjoy good beer and whiskey now & again.

The Civil department is flat out on upgrading of public spaces in Orlando East. The Ekurhuleni Trade Test Centre, which went to sleep for a while, has come back to life which will also keep as busy in the short term.

Oprah’s vision of developing young girls from disadvantaged backgrounds gave rise to her academy at Henley-on-Klip south of Johannesburg.

Themba were part of a team with architects Mashabane Rose commissioned to bring that dream to fruition.

The site had previously been identified by the education department but presented significant engineering problems being underlain by Dolomites and with the near surface materials being highly collapsible. Following careful investigation these issues were addressed by careful positioning of the buildings, strict adherence to a water manage regime and pre-collapse by dynamic compaction of the in-situ materials.

The school itself comprises a variety of independent buildings each with unique structural features and challenges: the main theatre with its complex array of different levels, and expansive diaphragm masonry walls, the large clear span roof of the dining hall clad in heavy tiles and an intricate composite support system, the library with its beautiful exposed bolted timber trusses……
